Social-emotional learning is consistently identified as one of the highest-impact investments in education. This course explores how AI tools can support, enhance and scale SEL programmes — without replacing the human relationships at the heart of emotional development.
Participants discover AI tools for empathy development, collaborative learning design, student self-awareness and community building, and leave with a complete SEL toolkit that genuinely integrates digital and human-centred approaches.
Learning Outcomes
Participants to the course will learn to:
Design AI-enhanced SEL programmes for primary and secondary classrooms
Use AI tools for collaborative learning, group dynamics and peer mediation support
Apply AI for emotional vocabulary development, empathy exercises and storytelling

Eastern Madeira — Community, Connection and Social Landscape
• Camacha wicker craft village: cooperation, craft and intergenerational knowledge.
• Portela viewpoint: perspective-taking — how the same landscape looks from different heights.
• Caniçal and Baía d'Abra: the far east of Madeira — remoteness and community resilience.
• Evening reflection: what do these communities model about social-emotional intelligence?
Tuesday
SEL Foundations & the AI Landscape
• SEL frameworks: CASEL competencies and their place in European education.
• Why SEL matters: research on achievement, wellbeing and long-term student outcomes.
• AI tools for SEL: an honest ecosystem tour — what exists and what it can actually do.
• Workshop: mapping SEL competencies to your subject area and school context.
Wednesday
AI Tools for Emotional Vocabulary & Self-Awareness
• AI-generated social stories, emotion cards and classroom reflection prompts.
• Digital journaling tools: AI support for student self-reflection and goal-setting.
• Growth mindset and AI: building a classroom culture of learning from mistakes.
• Design task: an AI-supported morning meeting or daily check-in routine.
Thursday
Cooperative Learning, Conflict Resolution & Democratic Culture
• AI for cooperative learning: generating parallel tasks and group role structures.
• Conflict resolution scenarios: AI-facilitated practice for restorative conversations.
• Democratic classroom culture: AI tools for student voice and shared decision-making.
• Erasmus+ citizenship: linking SEL to democratic values and European identity.
Friday
SEL AI Toolkit — Integration Workshop
• Workshop: assembling your complete SEL AI toolkit — ready to use from Monday.
• Case studies: three European schools that transformed SEL outcomes with AI support.
• Group challenge: design a 6-week AI-enhanced SEL programme for your school.
• Action planning: the three most impactful SEL changes to make next term.
Saturday
Certificate Ceremony & Closing
• Presentation of each participant's final project or action plan.
• Peer feedback and recognition of the week's collaborative work.
• Formal certificate ceremony in the Jardim Municipal do Funchal.
• Networking, group photo, and exchange of contacts for future Erasmus+ collaboration.

Course participants will receive training and engage in exercises designed to develop their skills as trainers. The provision of additional materials or resources will be determined based on the course structure and the instructor’s approach to meeting the learning objectives
