This immersive course, held on the beautiful São Miguel Island in the Azores, is designed for teachers who want to:
Learn innovative ways to teach nature and sustainability
Gain basic English language skills to introduce environmental education in English
Course Goals:
Provide teachers with beginner-friendly English instruction to enhance their ability to teach sustainability.
Foster effective methods to teach about preserving nature while introducing English vocabulary and communication.
Equip participants to instruct students, communities, and families about sustainability using basic English.
Integrate engaging indoor and outdoor activities that promote both environmental action and beginner English language learning.
Learning Outcomes
Participants to the course will learn to:
Participants will gain knowledge on various nature preservation methods and begin using basic English to discuss them.
They will learn how to teach sustainability concepts effectively, incorporating simple English phrases and vocabulary into their lessons.
They will develop skills to create dynamic and engaging lessons that promote both environmental responsibility and basic English language acquisition.
The course will equip them to design outdoor learning experiences that use English for basic communication and collaboration while promoting environmental action.
Programme
Azores: Mastering English and Sustainability Skills for Nature Preservation
Day 1
Introductions, goal setting, exploring different approaches to outdoor education, and reflecting on the relationship between nature and sustainability. Sessions will include basic English greetings, introductions, and vocabulary related to the environment.
Day 2
Guided tour to Sete Cidades for outdoor education on preserving wild areas. Activities will include walks, paired exercises focused on basic English communication about the environment, and reflection on implementing these methods in schools, discussing challenges and solutions using simple English phrases.
Day 3
Guided visit tour to Serra da Tronqueira and outdoor education about preserving wild flora and fauna, including new vocabulary in English, visit Centro do Priolo and also Parque da Ribeira dos Caldeirões, developing spontaneity, intuition and active listening during the day and apply in real cases in English and touching and observing the wild environment around Centro do Priolo.
Day 4
Visit to Caldeira das Furnas for outdoor education on climate change. Activities will include tree planting with basic English discussions about the importance of this action, nature walks with English vocabulary pictures or cards related to flora and fauna, learning about the role of biology in sustainability (including a visit to an interpretation center with English-guided tours focused on key vocabulary and phrases), and reflecting on effective teaching strategies through simple English discussions.
Day 5
Whale watching activity to learn about wildlife conservation and develop teaching methods for students, communities, and families, all while practicing basic English communication. Reflection on further actions for sustainability will be done through group discussions in English using simple phrases and vocabulary.
Day 6
Outdoor education activity in Ponta Delgada focusing on various knowledge areas like science, history, problem-solving, and civic responsibility. All activities will be conducted using basic English, promoting vocabulary building and communication. Course wrap-up, discussions on future collaboration in English, final evaluation, and certificate distribution.
Materials, digital tools & other learning resources
Course participants will receive training and engage in exercises designed to develop their skills as trainers. The provision of additional materials or resources will be determined based on the course structure and the instructor’s approach to meeting the learning objectives
