This course empowers teachers to promote active citizenship, societal values, and sustainability in schools. Using Madeira as a living laboratory, participants explore democracy, cultural heritage, environmental responsibility, and multicultural perspectives through immersive field visits, hands-on activities, and reflective workshops.


The course combines classroom sessions with excursions across the island to equip educators with practical tools to foster citizenship and sustainability in their schools.

Course Programme

Monday – Introduction to Democracy and Citizenship (Indoor, EB 2,3 do Louro, Funchal)

  • Workshop on democracy, citizenship, and values education.

  • Interactive session on sustainable practices in schools.

  • Reflection: principles of active citizenship and ethical education.


Tuesday – Environmental Sustainability & Outdoor Learning (Levada Walk)

  • Guided easy levada hike (e.g., Levada do Rei or Levada dos Balcões).

  • Observation of local flora and fauna.

  • Discussion on environmental sustainability and outdoor education.

  • Reflection on integrating eco-conscious practices in school projects.


Wednesday – Cultural Heritage & Community Engagement (Eastern Madeira – Machico / Santana)

  • Full-day excursion to Machico or Santana.

  • Visits to historical sites, traditional villages, and local museums.

  • Outdoor workshops on cultural heritage and local traditions.

  • Reflection on connecting heritage with citizenship education.


Thursday – Multiculturality & Responsible Tourism (Northern Madeira – São Vicente / Seixal)

  • Excursion to São Vicente caves or Seixal natural pools.

  • Workshops on biodiversity, environmental protection, and community engagement.

  • Focus on multicultural perspectives, inclusion, and responsible tourism.

  • Reflection: integrating global citizenship concepts into teaching.


Friday – Dolphin Watching, Marine Ecosystems & Global Citizenship (Catamaran, Western/Coastal Madeira)

  • Sailing along Madeira’s coast to observe dolphins and marine biodiversity.

  • Hands-on activities and discussions on teamwork, environmental stewardship, and global citizenship.

  • Reflection on applying outdoor and experiential learning methods in schools.


Saturday – Reflection, Project Sharing & Certificate Ceremony (Outdoor, Jardim Municipal do Funchal)

  • Presentation of participants’ mini-projects.

  • Outdoor reflection session on course learnings and practical implementation.

  • Certificates awarded in an outdoor ceremony, with networking.

Course participants will receive training and engage in exercises designed to develop their skills as trainers. The provision of additional materials or resources will be determined based on the course structure and the instructor’s approach to meeting the learning objectives​​
