AI Literacy

AI & Active Learning — Flipped Classroom, Gamification & PBL

6 days

Active learning methodologies — flipped classroom, gamification, project-based learning, cooperative learning — consistently produce better outcomes than traditional instruction. AI makes them dramatically easier to design, differentiate and implement. This course brings both together.

Participants discover how to use AI to design flipped content, generate game-based activities, build PBL units and create cooperative learning structures — then practise applying them in Madeira's classroom and on its remarkable northern coastline.

Learning Outcomes
Participants to the course will learn to:
  • Design AI-powered flipped classroom sequences for any subject and age group

  • Create gamified learning experiences using AI as both content generator and design partner

  • Build complete project-based learning units with AI at every stage

  • Apply cooperative learning structures enhanced by AI differentiation tools

  • Use AI to adapt active methodologies for diverse and mixed-ability groups

  • Develop a school active learning strategy integrating AI tools

Programme

AI & Active Learning — Flipped Classroom, Gamification & PBL

Monday

Northern Coast — Learning in Motion

• Santana thatched village: place-based and project-based learning in practice.

• São Vicente lava caves: inquiry-based discovery — questions before answers.

• Porto Moniz natural pools: cooperative challenge activities in an authentic setting.

• Evening reflection: what do active methodologies feel like from the learner's seat?

Tuesday

Flipped Classroom & AI-Generated Instructional Content

• Flipped classroom theory: what the research says and what it asks of teachers.

• AI for video script creation, narration tools and short instructional content.

• Building a flipped unit: AI generates the pre-learning, you design the in-class activity.

• Workshop: create a complete flipped sequence for your subject — today.

Wednesday

Gamification & Game-Based Learning with AI

• Gamification vs game-based learning: distinctions, evidence and classroom application.

• AI tools for game creation: Blooket, Gimkit, Kahoot AI and custom quiz generation.

• Narrative gamification: using AI to build story-driven classroom challenges.

• Design workshop: a gamified unit with AI-generated content for your subject.

Thursday

Cooperative Learning & AI Differentiation

• Cooperative structures: Jigsaw, Think-Pair-Share, Expert Groups — AI enhanced.

• AI for group task differentiation: generating parallel tasks at different complexity levels.

• Peer teaching tools: AI-assisted student-created resources and presentations.

• Workshop: design a cooperative learning sequence with full AI differentiation.

Friday

🌊 PLAN A — SPRING / SUMMER (March – September)

Active Learning at Sea

• Catamaran excursion: team challenges, cooperative activities on the open water.

• Onboard reflection: which active methodology felt most natural this week and why?

• Group project: design a school Active Learning Day using AI tools.

• Discussion: what does student engagement look like when AI removes the preparation burden?

🏫 PLAN B — AUTUMN / WINTER (October – February)

Active Methodologies Integration Workshop

• Showcase: participants present their AI-enhanced active learning unit.

• Critical peer review: does this unit activate students or just activate AI?

• School strategy workshop: building an active learning culture with AI support.

• Action planning: one active methodology to implement next term.

Saturday

Certificate Ceremony & Closing

• Presentation of each participant's final project or action plan.

• Peer feedback and recognition of the week's collaborative work.

• Formal certificate ceremony in the Jardim Municipal do Funchal.

• Networking, group photo, and exchange of contacts for future Erasmus+ collaboration.
